The Reason the Democratic Party Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

The decision from the DNC to block the publication of its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election is remarkable but not surprising. Resistant to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body behaves closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization focused on building grassroots capacities for winning elections.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Unwilling to break with the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the DNC has remained within that legacy throughout this past year. Making public the findings could have demonstrated whether party leaders actually want to encourage public discourse about the errors which allowed Donald Trump to win re-election. Yet, the DNC is proceeding as if there is little to understand following the stunning loss of 2024.

Our guiding principle: will this lead to victory? If the answer is no, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a justification that has been offered to justify concealing the analysis.

Key Issues a Report Could Have Explored

A genuine analysis of substance would not dodge key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Voter Alienation: The loss among millions of voters who supported the Democratic ticket in 2020 became a critical factor in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • A Decision to Run: The determined insistence of the incumbent to run again, alongside an extremely delayed exit, is seen by some as denying Democratic voters the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the campaign reportedly bowing to corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to confront the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Gaza Impact: An unwillingness to adjust a policy position regarding a major international conflict is cited as alienating many voters, particularly among youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • Eroding Young Voter Allegiance: Polling data shows a significant drop-off of votes for the candidate among voters aged 18-29.

A Record of Evasion

The decision to withhold is consistent with a recurring tendency of sidestepping difficult realities. It echoes a dynamic in which nearly all elected Democrat in Washington went along with an incumbent's decision for seeking another term right up until a catastrophic campaign event led to a change.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers within the party's base had been continually telling surveyors of their opposition to that candidate to run again.

Campaign Spending Concerns

A substantive report would also examine matters regarding financial allocations, such as how much money flowed to high-priced advisors as well as ad buyers during an electoral effort which expended an enormous amount during the general election.

The Broader Issue

Fundamentally, the suppression regarding the analysis is symptomatic of an allegiance to the existing power structure that oversaw a losing presidential campaign. The signal for ordinary supporters – which includes countless loyal volunteers – is that they do not have a right to see the lessons the leadership say they discovered from an analysis based on conversations with insiders.

A party unable to critically review its mistakes finds it difficult to climb out of the rut that proved so beneficial to the rival party.
