Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
